SETTLED — three distinct dates, each established: (1) 4 April 1960 was the signing of the transfer-of-power agreement with France, which Senegal commemorates as its National/Independence Day on April 4. (2) Formal independence from French sovereignty was attained on 20 June 1960 by the Federation of Mali, composed of the Republic of Senegal and the Soudanese Republic (US Office of the Historian, tier 1, fetched in full). (3) Senegal withdrew from the Federation on 20 August 1960, becoming a separate independent republic. The stored date 1960-04-04 is therefore the agreement/commemoration date, NOT the date of formal independence — see correction.
