UNIA Division 23 was founded in Chicago in 1920, established its Liberty Hall at 4859 South State Street, and claimed more than 20,000 members, making it the second-largest UNIA division in the world after Harlem. By 1930 the UNIA had established nine divisions in the Chicago area, including three in the city itself.
