Makaya McCraven moved to Chicago in 2007 and developed a live-improvisation-and-editing method through the 52-week 'In the Moment' residency series. His 2018 album 'Universal Beings' linked Chicago players — including cellist Tomeka Reid — with London and New York improvisers, positioning Chicago in a global contemporary jazz network.
