107.5 became WGCI in 1975 with a disco-oriented 'Studio 107' format, shifting toward broader urban contemporary around 1980. WGCI became Chicago's dominant Black commercial radio station, the ratings engine that carried R&B, hip-hop, and later house-inflected music to mass Black audiences.
