THING was launched in 1989 by designer/writer Robert Ford; ten issues covered Black queer, ball, club, house, performance, art, and HIV/AIDS communities. THING is the key print artifact of Chicago house's Black queer roots, documenting the scene the mainstream dance press largely missed.
