Earl Calloway joined the Chicago Defender as Fine Arts Editor and columnist in September 1963, becoming the paper's authoritative voice on Black music and arts. Calloway's decades of criticism documented Chicago's jazz, gospel, and classical Black musicians, forming a continuous critical record of the city's Black arts.
