The pattern of racial exclusion in Chicago-area suburbs and Illinois towns - sundown practices, restrictive covenants, and anti-Black violence keeping Black residents out - documented by sociologist James W. Loewen. Cicero was the most infamous Chicago-area case; Kenilworth, Park Forest, and Oak Park were built or kept all-white by design or covenant.
