Pilsen
PROVISIONAL evidence grade of this record
Lower West Side Chicago neighborhood, the center of Mexican-American and Latino culture. Named by Czech immigrants after Plzen in the Czech Republic; German/Irish railroad workers settled it in the mid-19th century, Czechs and Poles followed, and since the 1960s it has been predominantly Mexican. Home to nearly 400 outdoor murals, the National Museum of Mexican Art, and 18th Street's commercial corridor.
