Founder of the Jazz Showcase (1947); NEA Jazz Master who ran the club for nearly 70 years, greeting audiences at the door and taking the cover charge himself. Recorded club performances from the soundboard with musicians' consent across decades, building a contender for the most extensive live jazz archive of its kind. Died 2016; South Plymouth Court renamed Joe Segal Way in his honor. Club now owned/operated by his son Wayne Segal.
