Monica Haslip is a Chicago arts administrator, founder and executive director of Little Black Pearl Art & Design Center. Born in Birmingham, Alabama, in 1965, she graduated from the Alabama School of Fine Arts in 1983, studied at Atlanta College of Art, and worked in the photography department of Johnson Publishing Company in Chicago before becoming, in 1989, a senior marketing manager at Black Entertainment Television. In 1994 she founded Little Black Pearl, building it from a home-based after-school program into a 40,000-square-foot Bronzeville institution and an arts academy. The Obama White House named her a Champion of Change for youth violence prevention, and The HistoryMakers recorded her biography; she also works nationally as a racial-healing facilitator and trainer.
