Abbott-Sengstacke Family Papers
VERIFIED evidence grade of this record
The Abbott-Sengstacke Family Papers are the archive of the family that built the Chicago Defender: Robert S. Abbott, who founded the newspaper in 1905; his nephew John H. Sengstacke, who took over the family's papers on Abbott's death in 1940 and founded the National Newspaper Publishers Association; and Myrtle E. Sengstacke. Dating from 1847 to 1997, the papers document the Defender and the Robert S. Abbott Publishing Company, the NNPA, the Pittsburgh Courier, the Michigan Chronicle, Provident Hospital, and the political history of Black Chicago, through correspondence, manuscripts, organizational files, approximately 4,000 photographs, and over one hundred films. Robert A. Sengstacke donated the papers to the Chicago Public Library on May 30, 2007; the collection is held at the Vivian G. Harsh Research Collection of Afro-American History and Literature, Carter G. Woodson Regional Library.
