Dan Ryan Expressway
VERIFIED evidence grade of this record
The Dan Ryan Expressway is the Interstate 90/94 freeway running south from downtown Chicago — and the most contested piece of geography on the city's South Side. Built as the South Expressway, it was renamed for Cook County Board president Dan Ryan Jr. after his death in 1961; its first sections opened that December, and the eight-mile stretch from 71st Street north to the Eisenhower Expressway opened on December 15, 1962. In 1956, planners had shifted the route west — a decision historians link to isolating the growing Black community of the South Side — and for four miles the new expressway ran alongside Stateway Gardens and the Robert Taylor Homes, fixing in concrete the racial boundary between Black Chicago to the east and white ethnic neighborhoods to the west. CultureTechLens research treats the expressway as racial-geography infrastructure, not scenery.

Notes
Staged 2026-10-15 under CTL-GOV-006; Gate A clear (the corpus fragment “Dan Ryan” resolves to this full-form entity); Gate B met (scholarly working paper + newspaper of record). Type decision: the schema has no Place type; Locality is scoped to named places outside the Chicago-neighborhood frame, while Address expressly covers a “corridor” — the same typing as the East 63rd Street Corridor (CTL-E-0235). CTL treatment: timeline subject in CTL research brief CTL-RB-CHI-000003 and the CTL place dossiers; subject of 16 CTL research files (29 mentions) per the 2026-10-15 corpus gap scan. Statistic carried: the eight-mile stretch from 71st Street to the Eisenhower Expressway opened December 15, 1962 (Chicago Tribune chronology, checked 2026-10-15). No edge staged: located_in would force a multi-neighborhood corridor into a single Neighborhood, and the schema offers no Address→Locality or corridor-relation type; the omission is stated here rather than papered over.
