VERIFIED evidence grade of this record

The West Loop is the Near West Side industrial district west of Chicago's Loop where the Warehouse stood at 206 S. Jefferson Street. In the late 1970s it was a desolate former manufacturing area of loft and warehouse buildings, far from the established entertainment districts. That emptiness was functionally important to the club: the City of Chicago landmark report, drawing on Frankie Knuckles, notes the location suited a Black and gay clientele that was not welcome in the entertainment districts, and the district's sparse nighttime population made the club's very loud sound system survivable in a way a dense nightlife district would not have allowed.
