VERIFIED evidence grade of this record

The Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee — SNCC, pronounced 'snick' — was founded in April 1960 at Shaw University in Raleigh, North Carolina, at a conference of student sit-in leaders convened by Ella Baker (CTL-E-5393), the veteran organizer who urged the students to build an organization of their own rather than become a youth wing of an older group. SNCC became the movement's shock troops and its most democratic instrument: field secretaries who lived in the Deep South's most dangerous counties, organized voter registration where the NAACP's chapters had been crushed, sustained the Freedom Rides after the first buses burned, and built Freedom Summer and the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party. Its chairmen included John Lewis and, from 1966, Stokely Carmichael, under whom the organization turned toward Black Power (CTL-E-5430). SNCC's wager was that local people, organized patiently, were the movement — 'strong people don't need strong leaders,' in Baker's formulation. The organization faded by the early 1970s, but its alumni carried its method into every American movement that followed.

The record

Notes

Statistics: Founded April 1960, Shaw University, Raleigh (Britannica; SNCC Digital Gateway). The intake audit found NO SNCC record in the graph — a headline absence inside stop #21, whose other half (the sit-ins) is held at CTL-E-5420. Ella Baker's record: CTL-E-5393. No edge is staged to Baker: she convened the founding conference, and under the graph's evidence rule the convening is stated in both descriptions rather than asserted as a founding edge. · Curator's Judgment: DRAFT — for founder review: SNCC is the timeline's missing organization the way a keystone is missing — the arch stood, but nothing explained its shape. The record honors Baker's design: an organization built to make itself unnecessary, parish by parish and county by county. It nearly worked, which is more than most institutions can claim. · Photo slot: HELD — no rights-cleared image was verified for this record in the merge run's bounded Commons sweep (2026-10-15); slot stays HELD until a cleared image is obtained (commons upload, public-domain government portrait, or CTL original), per CTL-PHOTO-001.
