Friday (1995 film)

CTL-E-5481 · Work · film · 1995

PROVISIONAL evidence grade of this record

Friday, F. Gary Gray's feature directorial debut, written by Ice Cube and DJ Pooh and released by New Line Cinema on April 26, 1995, was conceived as a deliberate counterweight: where the era's dominant 'hood films' framed South Central Los Angeles through violence, Cube and Pooh drew on their own neighborhood experience to make a comedy set over a single day on one block — two friends, a porch, a cast of local characters, and stakes measured in rent money and reputation. It was Chris Tucker's breakout role, and it grossed roughly $27–28 million worldwide on its way to a large cult following carried into two sequels, Next Friday (2000) and Friday After Next (2002). It is noted as one of the few Hollywood productions of its period with an all-Black principal cast and crew. The graph files Friday as the comedy shelf's answer to Boyz n the Hood — filed in this same wave — the same streets and the same decade, argued in the opposite register: that the neighborhood's ordinary Friday was as true, and as filmable, as its worst day.

Notes

Statistics: New Line Cinema, 1995; sequels 2000 and 2002 (Wikipedia). Director F. Gary Gray holds no graph Person record — flagged as a future candidate. · Curator's Judgment: DRAFT — for founder review: Friday's radical act was scale: one day, one block, no body count — and from that smallness, a quoted-for-thirty-years classic. The record files it as the shelf's comic proof that South Central contained multitudes, including a Friday worth doing nothing in particular on. · Photo slot: HELD — poster/key art and production stills for this title are copyrighted studio material and were NOT pulled (per CTL-PHOTO-001 and the wave brief: never force non-free key art); no cleared Commons image was verified for this title in this run. Slot honestly HELD pending a cleared visual.
