The 74th Tony Awards honored the truncated 2019-20 Broadway season, and the ceremony itself belongs to the pandemic's history: originally scheduled for June 7, 2020, it was postponed indefinitely when Broadway went dark, and was finally presented on September 26, 2021, at the Winter Garden Theatre. Audra McDonald hosted the awards ceremony, streamed on Paramount+, and Leslie Odom Jr. hosted the companion CBS special Broadway's Back!, which presented the night's headline categories. Only eighteen productions were eligible in the shortened season. The CTL record is verified against the official winners list at tonyawards.com. The production honors went to The Inheritance as Best Play and Moulin Rouge! as Best Musical — the night's most awarded show, with ten wins. The season's special honors included a Lifetime Achievement Award for Graciela Daniele, Special Tonys for the Broadway Advocacy Coalition, David Byrne's American Utopia, and Freestyle Love Supreme, and the Isabelle Stevenson Award for Julie Halston.

Five graph persons attach to this event, and their honors need stating in their three different forms, because they are three different kinds of thing. Adrienne Warren won Best Leading Actress in a Musical for Tina, carrying the Tina Turner biomusical in the title role. David Alan Grier won Best Featured Actor in a Play for A Soldier's Play. Charles Fuller's edge is of the second kind: Fuller is the author of A Soldier's Play, and the production won Best Revival of a Play — the honor belongs to the play and its production, and the entry states it in that authorship form rather than as a personal category win. The third kind belongs to Irene Gandy and Beverly Jenkins, each of whom received a Tony Honors for Excellence in the Theatre, the American Theatre Wing's recognition of work that does not fit the competitive categories: Gandy, the veteran Broadway press agent and producer, and Jenkins, the stage manager whose career anchored productions across decades of Black theatre. The same Honors list also carried Fred Gallo and the New Federal Theatre.

The Honors bench that year deserves its full width. Alongside Gandy and Jenkins, the Tony Honors for Excellence in the Theatre went to Fred Gallo and to the New Federal Theatre — Woodie King Jr.'s company, a half-century institution of Black playwriting and production — which places two of Black theatre's foundational organizations, and two of its indispensable individual laborers, on the same honors line in the same year. Gandy's honor recognized a career spent as a Broadway press agent and producer; Jenkins's recognized the stage manager's craft, the discipline that makes eight shows a week happen. Neither honor is a consolation category; the Wing created the Honors to record exactly the work that competition cannot rank, and in 2020 it used them to write Black theatre's infrastructure into the official record.

The ceremony's two-part broadcast form — McDonald hosting the awards proper on Paramount+, Leslie Odom Jr. hosting the CBS Broadway's Back! concert special that presented the marquee categories — was an improvisation of the plague year, but it produced one durable image for this graph: the 1996 featured-actress winner from this batch's earlier event presiding over the ceremony at which Warren, Grier, Fuller, Gandy, and Jenkins were honored, in a theatre season that had been stopped mid-sentence and was being formally, carefully closed. The record this event leaves is correspondingly concentrated: eighteen eligible productions, judged sixteen months after the fact.

Held in an emptying city sixteen months after its season ended, the 74th Tonys read, in this graph's slice of them, as a ledger of Black theatre's infrastructure as much as its performances — a leading lady, a featured actor, a playwright whose work reached Broadway in this revival production, and two women honored for the publicity and stage-management labor that makes productions run. CTL holds the 2020 Tony Awards as a VERIFIED event record, with each person's honor kept in its exact official form.
