He rose to president of McDonald's USA in 2006, then chief operating officer, and on July 1, 2012, became president and CEO, the company's first African American chief executive. He led McDonald's until his retirement on March 1, 2015, and afterward founded the Chicago venture firm Cleveland Avenue, which invests in food, beverage, and related businesses.

Notes

Staged 2026-10-16 under CTL-GOV-006 (Fill 500 Lists Wave 3, Tier 1 — 747 Program). Gate A (2026-10-16): no Don Thompson entity in the live graph at 3,346 entities (exact/normalized/alias + token containment); ID CTL-E-5658 free. Supply: 747 Supply Ledger, Fill 500 Comedians gap #7. Vital status: LIVING — verified by his post-2015 founding and leadership of Cleveland Avenue and continuing board service; no death report in any source consulted. Conflicts shown, not blended: Upbringing geography is told differently across profiles: Chicago Magazine centers the Cabrini-Green childhood; the Indianapolis Business Journal calls him an “Indy native”; Face2Face Africa dates the Indianapolis move to age eleven. The description carries both — born and first raised in Chicago, schooled from eleven in Indianapolis — and the conflict is shown here rather than resolved by preference. His 2006 title is given as president of McDonald's USA (most sources) and of “McDonald's U.S. and Canada” (one profile); the description carries USA. STATISTICS (sourced, dated): Tenure as CEO: July 1, 2012 – March 1, 2015; total McDonald's service nearly 25 years (1990–2015) — Indianapolis Business Journal, January 2015. At his departure McDonald's operated more than 36,000 locations worldwide — Indianapolis Business Journal, January 2015. MEDIA: photo HELD (candidate class named in the packet; no Commons file page readable in this pass, PHOTO-001 does not clear on expectation); chart FILLED; video HELD (no matching CTL Short in the Link Map catalog, checked by name and variants); audio HELD (no verified rights basis). Blocked edges documented in the packet: McDonald's Corporation, Purdue University, Northrop Grumman, Cleveland Avenue — no graph entities (the graph's Purdue record is the football organization, not the university, and is not approximated). Thompson stages as a documented orphan-with-named-gaps in this packet, the wave-1 Finley precedent.
