Kenny Segal is a Los Angeles-based hip-hop producer, a veteran of the city's Project Blowed underground who came up through the 1990s drum-and-bass scene, whose lush, jazzy, atmospheric production has anchored some of the most acclaimed independent rap records of the past decade. He produced billy woods' Hiding Places (2019) in full for Backwoodz Studioz — an album that topped year-end lists at NPR, Pitchfork, Rolling Stone and Time and was later named one of Rolling Stone's 200 Greatest Hip-Hop Albums of All Time — and the pair followed it with Maps (2023). His Kenstrumentals beat-tape series and production for artists including Open Mike Eagle, R.A.P. Ferreira and Self-Jupiter made him the underground's producer of producers. In 2026 he released DOOMED!, his first full collaborative album with Open Mike Eagle (CTL-E-5562), after nearly twenty years of friendship — the billed duo of CultureTechLens Short #63. Open Mike Eagle's record was minted in Shorts Wave 2 under the duo rule, with Segal named as the further gap; this record is the duo's second principal.

Notes

STAGED 2026-10-16 (747 Program, Priority Gaps — Wave 5) — not merged; awaits founder merge go. Gate A: no match in the live graph (3,381 entities) under exact, normalized, alias, or token-containment screening, 2026-10-16. Near-name caution documented: the graph holds Joe Segal (CTL-E-5077), the Chicago jazz impresario — a different person; no alias or edge connects them, and the similarity is noted here so a future dedupe pass does not merge two Segals. Vital status: LIVING — active producer at staging (DOOMED! released August 14, 2026). Birth date: not published in the sources consulted; omitted rather than invented, and the era field is carried on his documented career span. Project ID: PPL-001, following the Open Mike Eagle record's project. MEDIA LAYER (staged 2026-10-16; full per-asset PHOTO-001 records + embed specs in the packet's staged JSON, Drive packet folder): map = N/A (Person records carry no map slot under the media-layer rule; maps attach to places and institutions.) | visual_assets = HELD: No file-page-level PHOTO-001 license verification completed at staging; slot held rather than filled with an u | chart = FILLED (CTL-created SVG built only from this record's sourced facts and statistics; CTL-branded palette (black / deep ) | video = FILLED | audio = HELD (No CTL-owned or rights-cleared matching-entity audio exists at staging; Segal's productions are the copyrighte)
