Jimi Hendrix, born Johnny Allen Hendrix on 27 November 1942 in Seattle, Washington, was an American guitarist, singer and composer who redefined the electric guitar. He took up the guitar at fifteen, served briefly in the U.S. Army in 1961–62, and then worked the Chitlin' Circuit, backing the Isley Brothers and, through mid-1965, Little Richard. Moving to London in late 1966 under manager Chas Chandler, he formed the Jimi Hendrix Experience with bassist Noel Redding and drummer Mitch Mitchell and scored three UK Top 10 hits: "Hey Joe," "Purple Haze" and "The Wind Cries Mary." His 1967 Monterey Pop Festival performance made him famous in the United States. His third album, Electric Ladyland (1968), was his only No. 1 album on the Billboard 200. He headlined Woodstock in 1969 and the Isle of Wight Festival in 1970. Hendrix died in London on 18 September 1970, at age 27, after a recording career as a featured artist of only four years. The Jimi Hendrix Experience were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1992.
