Questlove, born Ahmir Khalib Thompson on 20 January 1971 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is an American drummer, producer, DJ, filmmaker and author. Raised in a musical family — his father sang as Lee Andrews, fronting the 1950s doo-wop group Lee Andrews & the Hearts — he attended the Philadelphia High School for the Creative and Performing Arts, where he founded the Square Roots with Tariq Trotter, known as Black Thought; the group became the Roots. As the Roots' drummer and joint frontman he helped build one of hip-hop's defining live bands; the Roots have served as the house band for The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon since 2014. He co-founded the websites Okayplayer and OkayAfrica, produced recordings for artists including Common, D'Angelo, Erykah Badu and Jay-Z, and joined New York University's Clive Davis Institute as an adjunct professor in 2016. His directorial debut, Summer of Soul (2021), recovered the filmed record of the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival and won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature and the Grammy Award for Best Music Film in 2022. He is the author of several books, including Hip-Hop Is History (2024).
