Sacred Ground: The Chicago Streets of Timuel Black is the 2019 memoir of Chicago historian, educator, and activist Timuel D. Black Jr., published by Northwestern University Press in January 2019 in a 216-page paperback edition edited by Bart Schultz with Susan Klonsky. The narrative opens in 1919, when the infant Black arrived in Chicago from Birmingham, Alabama, with his family during the first Great Migration, in the summer of the Chicago race riot. It recounts his childhood and schooling in Bronzeville and other South Side neighborhoods, his service in Europe during World War II and the conflicts Black soldiers faced, and his later work as a labor organizer, teacher, and activist alongside figures including Duke Ellington and Martin Luther King Jr. The memoir closes with reflections on his friend and mentee Barack Obama and on a lifetime of students and community work in the city he called his sacred ground.
