Land of Hope: Chicago, Black Southerners, and the Great Migration is a history book by James R. Grossman, published by the University of Chicago Press — in cloth in 1989 and in the 398-page paperback edition dated February 1991 that this record's era follows. Drawing on government records, manuscripts, and other archival material, the book studies Black Southerners who migrated to Chicago during World War I and its aftermath, treating the movement as a cultural as well as economic experience: why migrants left, what they expected the North to be, and how they remade their lives, work, and institutions in the city. It is organized in two parts, the second describing how the Southerners lived once in Chicago, and it has been received in the scholarly community as a significant contribution to the history of Black migration to Chicago. Grossman later served as executive director of the American Historical Association and as a director of the Encyclopedia of Chicago project.
