What's Going On is Marvin Gaye's eleventh studio album, released on May 21, 1971, by Tamla, the Motown Records subsidiary label. Recorded in Detroit and California studios in 1970–71, it was Gaye's first album to credit him as producer and the first to credit Motown's in-house session band, the Funk Brothers. It is a concept album and song cycle whose songs mostly segue into one another, narrated from the viewpoint of a Vietnam veteran returning home to hatred, suffering, and injustice; its lyrics take up drug abuse, poverty, the war, and, in 'Mercy Mercy Me,' ecological harm. The album held No. 1 on Billboard's Soul LPs chart for nine weeks, and its title track, 'Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology),' and 'Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler)' all reached the Hot 100 top ten. It entered the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1998 and topped Rolling Stone's revised 2020 list of the 500 greatest albums.
