Everything Is Everything is the debut studio album by American soul singer, songwriter, and pianist Donny Hathaway, released on July 1, 1970, on Atco Records, the Atlantic Records subsidiary. Hathaway arrived at the sessions with a Chicago grounding: after leaving Howard University in 1967 he moved to Chicago, his birthplace, and worked for Curtis Mayfield's Curtom Records as a songwriter, producer, arranger, composer, conductor, and session player before signing with Atlantic in 1969. Hathaway produced the album with drummer Ric Powell, and he wrote or co-wrote five of its nine songs. Its best-known track, "The Ghetto," was co-written with Leroy Hutson, as was the socially conscious "Tryin' Times." The remaining selections mix covers — Ray Charles's "I Believe to My Soul" and Nina Simone's "To Be Young, Gifted and Black" — with the spiritual "Thank You Master (For My Soul)" and the love song "Je Vous Aime (I Love You)." On release the album peaked at No. 73 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart and No. 33 on the Billboard R&B Albums chart, and Rhino's label history treats it as the solo debut of an artist who had begun as a child gospel singer under the name Donny Pitts.
