Love Is the Thing is a 1957 studio album by American jazz vocalist Nat King Cole, released by Capitol Records in April 1957 and recorded on December 19 and 28, 1956, at Capitol's Hollywood studio. It was the first of four collaborations between Cole and arranger Gordon Jenkins, whose orchestra accompanies Cole throughout, and it was produced by Lee Gillette. The twelve-track original album presents Cole exclusively as a ballad singer, pairing his restrained vocal approach with Jenkins's unhurried string charts on standards including "When I Fall in Love," "Stardust," and the title track. "Stardust" was issued as the album's charting single. The record reached No. 1 on Billboard's Pop Albums chart and, according to RIAA records, achieved gold status in 1960 and platinum in 1992; it was Cole's first gold album. Cole and Jenkins went on to make three further albums together: The Very Thought of You (1958), Every Time I Feel the Spirit (1959), and Where Did Everyone Go? (1963). Discogs release records for the original Capitol pressing (catalogue W 824) confirm Jenkins's arranger-conductor credit and the twelve-song program of the 1957 mono LP.
