The National Convention of Gospel Choirs and Choruses (NCGCC) is the founding national organization of organized gospel choral music in the United States. A first gospel choral union was organized in Chicago in 1932, with Thomas A. Dorsey elected its president, and on August 30, 1933, at Pilgrim Baptist Church in Chicago, the National Convention of Gospel Choirs and Choruses was organized and held its first session. Dorsey, known as the Father of Gospel Music, founded the convention after recognizing a need to organize gospel choirs collectively into unions, and BlackPast records that singer Sallie Martin co-founded it with him in 1933. The convention is recorded as the first of its kind. Dorsey remained its president for six decades. Its annual week-long session is built around classes, educational workshops, lecture sessions and nightly concerts, designed for the betterment of the Christian singer, instrumentalist, educator and leader, and the organization continues to hold annual sessions under later leadership, including President Dr. Marabeth E. Gentry in the sources consulted.
