Combined Graph record U-07127 · provenance: build store (JSON graph), record CTL-E-5875.

Fay Young was the byline of Frank Albert Young (born John Lake Caution Jr., October 19, 1884, Williamsport, Pennsylvania – October 27, 1957, Chicago), the Chicago Defender sportswriter known to his peers as the Dean of Negro Sportswriters; his nickname 'Fay' came from the initials of his adopted name, F.A.Y. Working as a railroad dining-car waiter, he helped distribute the young Defender and reported news gathered on his routes before joining its staff as a volunteer in the paper's formative years; his bylined sports articles appeared from about 1912. He developed the Defender's sports page — an innovation other Black papers copied — became its sports editor, and also served as the paper's business manager by 1916 and managing editor by the late 1920s, with an interval as managing editor of the Kansas City Call in the 1930s. His columns included 'Fay Says,' begun in 1921, and 'Through the Years.' He covered the Negro Leagues from the Negro National League's founding in 1920, served as an officer of the Negro American League from 1937, and argued in print from the mid-1920s that Major League Baseball's color ban should be removed.

Notes

Staged 2026-10-16 under CTL-GOV-006 (Scan Tail Wave 1 — 747 Program, Wave 8; first Scan Tail packet at the founder's 40-record size). Gate A (2026-10-16): no Fay Young entity in the live graph at 3,523 entities (exact / normalized / alias + token containment); ID CTL-E-5875 free. Supply: 747 Supply Ledger, Tier 4 — corpus scan tail tranche (ranked survivors beyond the ledger's 300-sample), corpus-gap-candidates-2026-10-15.json ranked clean survivor #346. The scan supplied the NAME STRING ONLY; no fact in this record is sourced to it (CTL-GOV-004). SCOPE GATE: PASS — a foundational Chicago Defender journalist of five decades, central to Black sports journalism and Negro Leagues history. MEDIA: Map N/A (Person record). Visual HELD — candidate: the 1942 Jack Delano photograph of Frank 'Fay' Young at the Chicago Defender office (captioned in the SABR biography; FSA/LOC orbit), unverified at file-page level in this pass. Chart FILLED (Career timeline). Video HELD. Audio HELD. BRIEF CONFLICT (CTL-GOV-004, shown not blended): the staging brief described Fay Young as a woman who was the Defender's longtime women's/society editor. No source consulted supports that description, and the authoritative record contradicts it: SABR's biography and the encyclopedia record identify Fay Young as Frank Albert Young (1884-1957), a man, the Defender's sports editor and later managing editor, called the Dean of Negro Sportswriters. This record follows the sources. The brief's Bud Billiken / children's-page association was likewise not sourced and is not carried. VITAL STATUS: Deceased — October 19, 1884 – October 27, 1957, Chicago (SABR biography, citing Defender and Indianapolis Recorder obituary notices of November 1957). Tribute treatment applies. STATISTICS (sourced, dated): No statistic is asserted in this record. Dated anchors only: born October 19, 1884; 'Fay Says' column debuted September 23, 1921; died October 27, 1957 (SABR biography and its cited Defender/Recorder obituary notices). MEDIA LAYER (staged 2026-10-16; full per-asset PHOTO-001 records + embed specs in the packet's staged JSON, Drive packet folder): map = N/A (Person record: maps attach to specific places; no single map spec is staged for a person in this pass.) | visual_assets = HELD: | chart = FILLED (CTL-created SVG (black / deep red / gold) built only from this record's sourced facts) | video = HELD (No matching-entity CTL Short in the Shorts Link Map catalog (checked by name and variants), and no official/em) | audio = HELD (No audio with a verified rights basis was staged in this pass.)
