Tristan Thompson, born Tristan Trevor James Thompson on 13 March 1991 in Brampton, Ontario, Canada, is a Canadian-American former center and one of the most successful Canadian players of his generation, raised by parents of Jamaican descent. After one season at the University of Texas, where he was Big 12 Freshman of the Year, Cleveland selected him fourth overall in the 2011 NBA draft — at the time the highest a Canadian had ever been picked. He made the NBA All-Rookie Second Team and became the Cavaliers' durable interior anchor, twice leading the league in games played. Starting all 21 playoff games, he helped Cleveland win the 2016 NBA championship, the first in franchise history, coming back from a 3-1 Finals deficit against Golden State. He later played for Boston, Sacramento, Indiana, Chicago and the Los Angeles Lakers before returning to Cleveland for 2023-25. Across 819 regular-season games he averaged 8.3 points and 7.8 rebounds. Unsigned through 2025-26, he confirmed his retirement as a player in 2026 and took a global ambassador role with Dubai Basketball.
