Wilt Chamberlain, born Wilton Norman Chamberlain on 21 August 1936 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was an American center whose records still define basketball's outer limits. A star at Philadelphia's Overbrook High School and at the University of Kansas, where he reached the 1957 NCAA final, he spent a season with the Harlem Globetrotters before joining the Philadelphia Warriors in 1959 and winning both Rookie of the Year and Most Valuable Player in his first season. On 2 March 1962 he scored 100 points in a single game, a record that still stands, and that season he averaged 50.4 points per game. He is the only player to average at least 30 points and 20 rebounds over an entire career, finishing with 31,419 points and an NBA-record 23,924 rebounds. Traded to the Philadelphia 76ers, he won his first championship in 1967, then moved to the Los Angeles Lakers in 1968, won a second title in 1972 and earned Finals MVP. A four-time league MVP and 13-time All-Star, he was enshrined in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1978. He died on 12 October 1999 in Los Angeles, California, at age 63.
