The East-West All-Star Game was the Negro leagues' annual showcase, first played September 10, 1933, at Comiskey Park in Chicago, where the West defeated the East 11–7 before 19,568 fans. Players were chosen by fan balloting conducted through Black newspapers; in the first vote Oscar Charleston led all players with 43,793 ballots and Willie Foster drew 40,637. Bill Foster pitched a complete game for the win and Mule Suttles hit the game's first home run. The classic ran from 1933 to 1950 and became Black America's premier recurring sporting event: the 1939 edition drew a record 40,000 fans, and the 1947 game outdrew that year's Major League Baseball All-Star Game at Wrigley Field by 7,000. Historian Larry Lester has called it the biggest event in Black America, with the sole exception of a Joe Louis fight.
