Sidney Poitier (born February 20, 1927, Miami, to Bahamian parents, and raised on Cat Island in the Bahamas; died January 6, 2022, Los Angeles, aged 94) was the actor who carried Black dignity into the American screen's center. Trained at the American Negro Theatre, he broke through in Blackboard Jungle (1955), earned the first Best Actor Oscar nomination given a Black man for The Defiant Ones (1958), and won the Academy Award for Best Actor for Lilies of the Field (the 1963 film; the award in 1964) — the first Black man, and first Bahamian, to win it. In 1967 he was the year's top box-office draw with To Sir, with Love, In the Heat of the Night, and Guess Who's Coming to Dinner. As a director he made Uptown Saturday Night (1974) and Stir Crazy (1980), then the highest-grossing film by a Black director. He received an Honorary Oscar in 2002, the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2009, and served as the Bahamas' ambassador to Japan from 1997 to 2007.
