Jack Leroy Wilson Jr. (June 9, 1934 – January 21, 1984), born in Detroit's Highland Park enclave, was a singer whose athletic, operatic performances helped carry rhythm and blues into soul. He first gained fame as lead singer of Billy Ward and His Dominoes, replacing Clyde McPhatter, and went solo in 1957. Nicknamed 'Mr. Excitement,' he scored more than fifty chart singles across R&B, pop, soul, and doo-wop, including 'Reet Petite,' 'Lonely Teardrops,' 'Baby Workout,' and '(Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher and Higher,' several early hits co-written by a young Berry Gordy Jr. His spins, splits, and vocal range made him a formative influence on Elvis Presley, James Brown, and Michael Jackson. In September 1975 he suffered a heart attack on stage during a benefit performance and remained in a minimally conscious state until his death in 1984 at age forty-nine. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987, and two of his recordings entered the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999.
