Roy Campanella (born November 19, 1921, Philadelphia; died June 26, 1993, Woodland Hills, California) was a catcher who starred on both sides of baseball's color line. He began in the Negro leagues as a teenager with the Washington Elite Giants in 1937 and became a star with the Baltimore Elite Giants, also playing in the Mexican League, before joining the Brooklyn Dodgers organization. He debuted in the majors on April 20, 1948, and caught for Brooklyn for ten seasons, winning the National League Most Valuable Player award three times, in 1951, 1953, and 1955, and catching the Dodgers' 1955 World Series championship team. In 1953 he set single-season records for a catcher with 41 home runs and 142 runs batted in. An automobile accident in January 1958 left him paralyzed and ended his playing career; he remained with the Dodgers in scouting and community roles and entered the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1969.
