Nikki Giovanni (born Yolanda Cornelia Giovanni, June 7, 1943, Knoxville, Tennessee; died December 9, 2024, Virginia) was a poet, writer, and educator who emerged as a leading voice of the Black Arts Movement. Educated at Fisk University, where she graduated in 1967, she published her first volumes, Black Feeling, Black Talk (1968) and Black Judgment (1969), followed by Re: Creation (1970), and went on to write dozens of poetry collections, essays, and eleven illustrated children's books. Her honors included seven NAACP Image Awards for Literature, the Langston Hughes Award, and the Frost Medal for lifetime achievement in poetry. Giovanni taught at Rutgers from 1969 and at Virginia Tech from 1987 to 2022, where she was named University Distinguished Professor and remained on the faculty until her death. Her work moved between public witness — race, history, and collective grief — and an intimate register of family, place, and joy.
