Abiodun Oyewole (born Charles Davis, February 25, 1948, Cincinnati, Ohio) is a poet, teacher, and founding member of the spoken-word group the Last Poets. Raised in Queens, New York, amid jazz and gospel records and the poetry of Langston Hughes, he received his Yoruba name at fifteen at a temple in Harlem. On May 19, 1968 — Malcolm X's birthday — Oyewole, David Nelson, and Gylan Kain performed at a Malcolm X memorial in Harlem, and the Last Poets were born; their percussive, Black-nationalist poetry, first recorded in 1970, is widely credited with laying groundwork for hip-hop. A prison term in North Carolina interrupted his tenure; on study release he earned a bachelor's degree, later completing a doctorate at Columbia University, where he served on the faculty. He rejoined the group for its 1990s resurgence and continues to write, publish, perform, and host a weekly artists' salon at his Harlem home.

Notes

Staged 2026-10-16 under CTL-GOV-006 (Scan Tail Wave 3 — 747 Program, Wave 10; third Scan Tail packet at the founder's 40-record size). Gate A (2026-10-16): no Abiodun Oyewole entity in the live graph at 3,683 entities (exact / normalized / alias + token containment); ID CTL-E-6030 free. Supply: 747 Supply Ledger, Tier 4 — Scan Tail Wave 2 packet ordered reserve, position 25 of 25 (corpus-gap-candidates-2026-10-15.json ranked clean survivor #827). The scan supplied the NAME STRING ONLY; no fact in this record is sourced to it (CTL-GOV-004). SCOPE GATE: PASS — founding member of the homed group the Last Poets (CTL-E-5696, PPL-001 copied from that record); spoken-word and hip-hop origins core scope. Vital status: LIVING — born February 25, 1948; documented performing, publishing, and hosting in the 2020s. No death record exists in any source consulted. STATISTICS (sourced, dated): Education CONFLICT SHOWN, NOT BLENDED: the HistoryMakers states Oyewole earned a Ph.D. from Columbia University, while his publisher 2Leaf Press lists an M.A. in education at Columbia and a Columbia Charles H. Revson Fellowship (1989) without a doctorate. Both credential accounts are carried as sourced; the description says only that he completed a doctorate at Columbia per the HistoryMakers, and the discrepancy is flagged here for enrichment-pass resolution. Last Poets founded May 19, 1968 (both sources). MEDIA: photo HELD (Abiodun Oyewole portrait in Harlem (the photograph carried on his reference page; PHOTO-001 verification still required) named as candidate; no file-page verification in this pass); chart FILLED (charts/chart-ctl-e-6030-abiodun-oyewole.svg); video HELD (no matching-entity CTL Short or verified-rights archival video staged); audio HELD (no rights-cleared matching-entity audio staged).
