Combined Graph record U-07337 · provenance: build store (JSON graph), record CTL-E-6121.

The Leland Giants were a Chicago Negro league baseball team formed in 1901 by the merger of the Chicago Unions and the Chicago Columbia Giants, competing independently during the first decade of the twentieth century. First called the Chicago Union Giants, the team was renamed for owner-manager Frank Leland before the 1905 season. Catcher Bruce Petway joined in 1906, and talent rose sharply in 1907 as Rube Foster, Big Bill Gatewood and other players arrived from East Coast teams; Pete Hill was added in 1908, when the club went 64–21 against semipro teams. Foster managed the team in 1909, and that October the Lelands played the Chicago Cubs closely, losing two one-run decisions and another close game. In 1910 the club split: Foster retained the Leland Giants side — one source credits Foster, another credits Beauregard Moseley, with winning the rights to the name — while Leland's new team became the Chicago Giants. That 1910 club said it went 123–6 overall. In 1911 the club was renamed the Chicago American Giants and moved to Schorling's Park, the former South Side Park; before 1911 it had played mainly at the earlier Auburn Park grounds at 79th and Wentworth.
