Bush Mama is a 1979 American film by Ethiopian-American director Haile Gerima, a signal work of the L.A. Rebellion, the movement of political and experimental Black cinema that developed around the University of California, Los Angeles, in the 1970s. Gerima made the film as his thesis project at UCLA, directing, producing and editing it on a small budget, with cinematography by Roderick Young and Charles Burnett. It follows Dorothy, played by Barbara O. Jones, a mother living in the Watts neighborhood of Los Angeles, as she grapples with the imprisonment of her husband T.C., a discharged Vietnam veteran falsely arrested for a crime he did not commit, and navigates the bureaucratic tangles of public assistance. The film blends narrative fiction, documentary, surrealism and political modernism: its first half uses a cinema verite style with heavy improvisation, while the second half moves toward a more agitprop approach, tracing Dorothy's political awakening. The film runs 97 minutes, in 16mm. In 2022 it was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as culturally, historically or aesthetically significant.
