Amber Ruffin (born January 9, 1979, in Omaha, Nebraska) is an American comedian, writer, actress, and playwright whose hiring changed late-night television. Trained in improvisation, she performed in Omaha, moved through Chicago's iO Theater and The Second City, and worked with Boom Chicago in Amsterdam before joining the writing staff of Late Night with Seth Meyers at its 2014 launch. Industry and magazine sources agree on the significance of that appointment: she was the first Black woman to write for a late-night network talk show in the United States. She also performs on the program in recurring segments. From 2020 she hosted her own topical late-night program, The Amber Ruffin Show, on NBCUniversal's Peacock service; sources differ slightly on its run, with Out magazine giving 2020 to 2023 and her encyclopedia entry giving 2020 to 2022 for the Peacock run. With her sister Lacey Lamar she co-authored the New York Times best-selling book published in January 2021 and a second book in 2022, and she co-wrote the book for the Broadway musical adaptation of Some Like It Hot. In 2025 she was continuing on CNN's Have I Got News for You and developing new stage work, remaining an active public performer.
