Alexander Crummell was a nineteenth-century Episcopal priest, missionary, scholar, and teacher born in New York City in 1819 to free Black parents. Denied admission to the Episcopal Church's General Theological Seminary because of his race, he studied privately and became an Episcopal minister at twenty-five; diocesan records place his ordination to the diaconate in 1842 and to the priesthood in 1844. From 1848 to 1853 he lectured and studied in England, graduating from Queens' College, Cambridge, in 1853, then took a faculty position at Liberia College in Monrovia and urged African American emigration to Liberia. Internal politics forced him to leave Liberia in 1872. Returning to Washington, D.C., he founded St. Luke's Episcopal Church, helped organize opposition to a segregated missionary district, taught at Howard University from 1895 to 1897, and in 1897 helped found the American Negro Academy as its first president.

Notes

Staged 2026-10-16 under CTL-GOV-006 (Scan Tail Wave 6 — 747 Program, Wave 13; sixth Scan Tail packet at the founder’s 40-record size). Gate A (2026-10-16): Gate A CLEAR (script + hand-checked 2026-10-16): no Alexander Crummell entity, alias, or variant in the live graph (3,910 entities). ID CTL-E-6208 free at staging. Supply: 747 Supply Ledger — scan string #2341 (corpus-gap-candidates-2026-10-15.json), banked in the Scan Tail Wave 5 reserve (Appendix E), re-screened CLEAR against the live graph at 3,910 entities by this wave. The supply supplied the name only; every fact is sourced under CTL-GOV-004. SCOPE GATE: A foundational Black intellectual and pan-African thinker whose American Negro Academy modeled Black scholarly institution-building; in scope for the graph's intellectual-history and diaspora lines. Vital status: DECEASED — born in New York City in 1819; died in Point Pleasant, New Jersey, in 1898, per BlackPast.org. CONFLICT SHOWN: a Wikipedia result seen in search (not opened, not counted) gives Red Bank, New Jersey, as death place; the opened source says Point Pleasant, so Point Pleasant is carried here and the discrepancy is flagged, not blended. STATISTICS — Ordained deacon 1842, priest 1844 (Episcopal Diocese of New York). Graduated Queens' College, Cambridge, 1853 (BlackPast.org). In Liberia until 1872 (BlackPast.org). Taught at Howard University 1895–1897 and helped found the American Negro Academy in 1897 as first president (BlackPast.org). MEDIA: photo HELD (A late-life portrait photograph of Crummell held with his papers at the Schomburg Center is a plausible candidate; no license is claimed and a file-level PHOTO-001 record is required.); chart FILLED (charts/chart-ctl-e-6208-alexander-crummell.svg); video HELD (no matching-entity CTL Short found; near-miss: none titled for Crummell.); audio HELD (no rights-cleared matching-entity audio staged); map N/A. MEDIA LAYER (staged 2026-10-16; full per-asset PHOTO-001 records + embed specs in the packet's staged JSON, Drive packet folder): map = N/A (Person records carry no map slot; maps attach to places and institutions.) | visual_assets = HELD: | chart = FILLED (CTL-created chart (black / deep red / gold) built only from this record’s sourced statistics and timeline fact) | video = HELD (no matching-entity CTL Short found; near-miss: none titled for Crummell.) | audio = HELD (HELD: No CTL-owned or rights-cleared matching-entity audio exists at staging.)
