Arthur Ashe was an American tennis champion and civil-rights activist born in Richmond, Virginia, on July 10, 1943. Raised under segregation, he began playing at age seven, was coached by Walter Johnson and Richard Hudlin, and attended the University of California, Los Angeles, on a tennis scholarship, winning intercollegiate singles and doubles titles in 1965. In 1963 he became the first Black member of the U.S. Davis Cup team. In 1968 he won the first U.S. Open of the modern open era, becoming the first Black player to win a major men's singles championship; he added the Australian Open in 1970 and Wimbledon in 1975, beating the heavily favored Jimmy Connors, and remains the only Black man to have won the men's singles title at those events. A co-founder of the Association of Tennis Professionals in 1972, he retired in 1980, captained the Davis Cup team from 1981 to 1985, campaigned against South African apartheid, and after revealing in April 1992 that he had AIDS, devoted his final months to educating the public about the disease. He died in New York on February 6, 1993.

Notes

Staged 2026-10-16 under CTL-GOV-006 (Scan Tail Wave 6 — 747 Program, Wave 13; sixth Scan Tail packet at the founder’s 40-record size). Gate A (2026-10-16): Gate A CLEAR (script + hand-checked 2026-10-16): no Arthur Ashe entity, alias, or variant in the live graph (3,910 entities). ID CTL-E-6211 free at staging. Supply: 747 Supply Ledger — scan string #2351 (corpus-gap-candidates-2026-10-15.json), banked in the Scan Tail Wave 5 reserve (Appendix E), re-screened CLEAR against the live graph at 3,910 entities by this wave. The supply supplied the name only; every fact is sourced under CTL-GOV-004. SCOPE GATE: The only Black man to win the U.S. Open, Australian Open, and Wimbledon singles titles, and a model of athlete-activism that CTL's sports and life-history lines document; no Chicago base, in scope on national significance. Vital status: DECEASED — born July 10, 1943, in Richmond, Virginia; died February 6, 1993, in New York, New York, per Britannica, corroborated by HISTORY (died February 6, 1993, at age 49, in New York City). STATISTICS — Grand Slam singles titles: U.S. Open 1968, Australian Open 1970, Wimbledon 1975 (both opened sources). Ranked first in world tennis in 1975 (Britannica). Davis Cup player 1963–1970, 1975, 1977–1978 and captain 1981–1985 (Britannica); HISTORY summarizes ten years on the team with three championships. Inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1985 (HISTORY). CONFLICT SHOWN: career-title totals differ across unopened search results (33, 51, 87 in different snippets) — none was opened, so no career-title total is asserted. MEDIA: photo HELD (A photograph of Ashe holding the Wimbledon trophy after his 1975 singles win, of the kind Britannica illustrates its entry with, is a plausible candidate; no license is claimed and a file-level PHOTO-001 record is required.); chart FILLED (charts/chart-ctl-e-6211-arthur-ashe.svg); video HELD (no matching-entity CTL Short found; near-miss: none titled for Ashe.); audio HELD (no rights-cleared matching-entity audio staged); map N/A. MEDIA LAYER (staged 2026-10-16; full per-asset PHOTO-001 records + embed specs in the packet's staged JSON, Drive packet folder): map = N/A (Person records carry no map slot; maps attach to places and institutions.) | visual_assets = HELD: | chart = FILLED (CTL-created chart (black / deep red / gold) built only from this record’s sourced statistics and timeline fact) | video = HELD (no matching-entity CTL Short found; near-miss: none titled for Ashe.) | audio = HELD (HELD: No CTL-owned or rights-cleared matching-entity audio exists at staging.)
