Black Music Month is the annual June observance celebrating the African American musical influences that the Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History and Culture calls an essential part of the nation's cultural heritage. It originated in 1979, when Philadelphia soul pioneer Kenny Gamble, Cleveland radio DJ Ed Wright, and media strategist Dyana Williams brought the idea forth out of the Black Music Association, which Gamble had founded in 1978 on the model of the Country Music Association. On June 7, 1979, President Jimmy Carter designated June as the month to recognize Black music, and the first celebration was held on the White House lawn. The founders' original purpose was economic as much as celebratory: to promote, protect, and perpetuate the business of Black music. The observance is re-established annually by presidential proclamation; under President Barack Obama it was renamed African-American Music Appreciation Month, a name later set aside in favor of the original. Each June, museums, media, and the music industry mark the genres Black artists created and fostered, from spirituals and gospel through blues, jazz, R&B, rock and roll, and hip-hop.

Staged 2026-10-16 under CTL-GOV-006 (Scan Tail Wave 6 — 747 Program, Wave 13; sixth Scan Tail packet at the founder’s 40-record size). Gate A (2026-10-16): Gate A CLEAR (script + hand-checked 2026-10-16): no Black Music Month entity, alias, or variant in the live graph (3,910 entities). ID CTL-E-6240 free at staging. Supply: 747 Supply Ledger — scan string #2528 (corpus-gap-candidates-2026-10-15.json), banked in the Scan Tail Wave 5 reserve (Appendix E), re-screened CLEAR against the live graph at 3,910 entities by this wave. The supply supplied the name only; every fact is sourced under CTL-GOV-004. SCOPE GATE: National observance record; no Chicago founding claim is made. Its Chicago relevance is as the June frame under which Chicago Black music is programmed and covered, but the record itself is national in scope. Vital status: Current and recurring — observed every June and re-established annually by presidential proclamation (NMAAHC, opened 2026-10-16); the AP counted 2024 as the 45th annual commemoration. STATISTICS — Dated anchors from opened sources: Black Music Association founded 1978 (AP); designation June 7, 1979 (Diverse, citing the National Museum of African-American Music); first White House lawn celebration 1979 (AP); renamed in 2009 (Diverse). CONFLICT SHOWN, NOT BLENDED: an AP photo caption inside the opened AP article dates Gamble's founding of Black Music Month to 1971, contradicting the article's own body text and both other opened sources, which give 1979 — the record follows 1979 and flags the caption as an apparent error. A further nuance is left unresolved rather than asserted: opened sources describe Carter's 1979 act as a designation/proclamation, while the later congressional recognition (2000) reported in unopened secondary coverage is not carried in this record.
