Barbara Charline Jordan was an American lawyer, educator, and Democratic politician born in Houston, Texas, on February 21, 1936. She graduated from Phillis Wheatley High School in 1952, earned a B.A. from Texas Southern University in 1956, and received her law degree from Boston University School of Law in 1959. Admitted to the Massachusetts and Texas bars that year, she began practicing law in Houston in 1960. Elected to the Texas Senate in 1966, she served from 1967 to 1972 as the first Black woman in that body and the first African American elected to it since Reconstruction. In 1972 she won a Houston-based seat in the U.S. House of Representatives, and she served in the 93rd, 94th, and 95th Congresses, from January 3, 1973, to January 3, 1979. As a freshman representative she sat on the House Judiciary Committee during its impeachment investigation of President Richard M. Nixon, and her opening statement on the constitutional gravity of the process made her a national figure; the committee passed three articles of impeachment. After Congress she taught at the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas at Austin and chaired the U.S. Commission on Immigration Reform. She died in Austin on January 17, 1996.
