Charles Gordon Burroughs was a Chicago poet who, with his wife, Margaret Taylor-Burroughs, co-founded the museum now known as the DuSable Black History Museum and Education Center. The two married on December 23, 1949. In their home at 3806 South Michigan Avenue in Chicago's Bronzeville neighborhood, on the South Side, they started the Ebony Museum of Negro History and Art, chartered on February 16, 1961. The couple cleared the first-floor parlor of the house for the museum and filled rooms with art and objects they had collected from Africa and pieces friends had offered. The museum, created to preserve, study, and teach Black history and art, ran classes on how to teach Black history and drew visiting students. It was renamed for Jean Baptiste Point du Sable in 1968 and moved in 1973 to a former park administration building in Washington Park. Britannica describes the institution as the oldest independently owned museum in the United States dedicated to African American history and culture, holding more than 15,000 pieces of art and historical memorabilia, and a Smithsonian Institution affiliate. Charles Burroughs died in 1994, after forty-five years of marriage.

Notes
Staged 2026-10-16 under CTL-GOV-006 (Scan Tail Wave 7 — 747 Program, FINAL Wave 13; seventh Scan Tail packet at the founder's 40-record size). Gate A (2026-10-16): Gate A CLEAR (hand-checked 2026-10-16): no Charles Burroughs entity, alias, or variant in the live graph (3,910 entities). Containment hits hand-resolved: CTL-E-0107 Dr. Margaret Burroughs (his wife and co-founder) and CTL-E-4408 Nannie Helen Burroughs are different people; Charles Burroughs is named inside the DuSable Museum and Founding records but holds no Person record of his own. ID CTL-E-6250 free at staging. Supply: 747 Supply Ledger — Tier 4 corpus scan tail, corpus-gap-candidates-2026-10-15.json ranked #2749. The scan supplied the name string only; every fact is sourced under CTL-GOV-004. SCOPE GATE: Black Chicago first: a Chicago poet who co-founded, in his own Bronzeville home, the first independent Black history museum in the United States — a core Black Chicago institution whose museum record already sits in this graph without a record for him. Vital status: DECEASED — died in 1994 (MargaretBurroughs.com, accessed 2026-10-16, which records the couple married forty-five years at his death). No month, day, or place of death was found in the opened sources, and none is asserted. STATISTICS — Museum figures, Britannica (accessed 2026-10-16): collection of more than 15,000 pieces of art and historical memorabilia; chartering date February 16, 1961 is from the museum's own history as carried in the opened DuSable Museum reference record. CONFLICT SHOWN, NOT BLENDED: the founding group is described differently across sources — Britannica and Smithsonian Magazine center the couple (Smithsonian adds 'a group of other concerned citizens'), while the museum's fuller founder list also names Gerard Lew, Eugene Feldman, Bernard Goss, and Marian M. Hadley; this record claims only the couple's co-founding, which every opened source supports. The founding name also varies in short form (Ebony Museum of Negro History vs. Ebony Museum of Negro History and Art); the full form is used. TIER GAP: No opened source is a biography of Charles Burroughs himself: every opened source documents him through Margaret Taylor-Burroughs or through the museum, no authoritative source opened gives his birth date or a full death date, and his identification as a poet rests on The Johnson Collection alone. A standalone biographical source for Charles Burroughs (obituary, HistoryMakers, or Chicago press record) is required before this record can be Verified. MEDIA: photo HELD (HELD — candidate: the Smithsonian Magazine photograph of the Burroughses' house and its first-floor parlor, the museum's first home; no portrait of Charles Burroughs himself was located in the opened sources; no file page was read at file level and NO license is claimed — PHOTO-001 verification deferred. — named candidate only; file-level rights verification per CTL-PHOTO-001 still required; no license claimed); chart per media_spec (coordinator builds the CTL chart from this record's sourced facts); video HELD (No matching-entity CTL Short in the Shorts Link Map (shorts-link-map-2026-10-15.json, 233 rows, checked by name and variants, 2026-10-16); no near-miss title found.); audio HELD (no rights-cleared matching-entity audio staged); map N/A (person record). MEDIA LAYER (staged 2026-10-16; full per-asset PHOTO-001 records + embed specs in the packet's staged JSON, Drive packet folder): map = N/A (Person records carry no map slot.) | visual_assets = HELD: | chart = FILLED (Created for this packet (CTL graphic, CTL-PHOTO-001 lane) from the record's sourced facts.) | video = HELD (No matching-entity CTL Short in the Shorts Link Map (shorts-link-map-2026-10-15.json, 233 rows, checked by nam) | audio = HELD (No rights-cleared matching-entity audio staged; audio slot held pending a CTL-PHOTO-001-consistent rights basi)
