Chicken Bone Beach, formally Missouri Avenue Beach, is the section of Atlantic City, New Jersey's ocean beach between Missouri and Mississippi Avenues, at the foot of Missouri Avenue near the city's Northside neighborhood. Before 1900, Black and white residents used Atlantic City's beaches together; around 1900, hotel owners pushed Black beachgoers down to the Missouri Avenue beach, south of the Million Dollar Pier, to appease guests from the Jim Crow South, and it remained the city's Blacks-only beach until the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Its nickname came from the fried-chicken picnic lunches families brought because many eating establishments would not serve them. By the 1940s Black entrepreneurs provided summer-evening entertainment, and performers who played the city's Black venues, among them Sammy Davis Jr., Louis Jordan, the Mills Brothers, and Jackie “Moms” Mabley, drew visitors; Club Harlem showgirls called the beach Sunshine Row. Martin Luther King Jr. was photographed on a family vacation there in 1956. In 1997 the Atlantic City Council passed an ordinance declaring Chicken Bone Beach a historical landmark, and the Chicken Bone Beach Historical Foundation installed a commemorative marker in 2015.
