Black Perspectives is the Chicago International Film Festival's program devoted to Black American cinema and films of the African diaspora, founded in 1997 in collaboration with Spike Lee and presented by Cinema/Chicago. The festival states the program's purpose as highlighting the excellence and diversity of Black American cinema and diaspora filmmaking; across three decades it has premiered Ava DuVernay's first feature and presented work by Barry Jenkins, Maya Angelou, Djibril Diop Mambéty, Abderrahmane Sissako and Steve McQueen, and the festival has honored Viola Davis, Forest Whitaker, Sidney Poitier, Halle Berry, Morgan Freeman and Pam Grier in the program's history. The program now runs year-round. Its 30th anniversary anchored the 62nd festival in October 2026: a Career Achievement Award evening for Marlon Wayans at the Logan Center on October 19, moderated by Omar Epps; Cheryl Dunye's Career Achievement tribute with a retrospective screening of The Watermelon Woman; Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor's Tour de Force Award at the world premiere of Liz Here Now; Sophie Okonedo's Spotlight Award at the Centerpiece presentation of Mouse; new work by Ava DuVernay (14th) and David Greaves (Once Upon a Time in Harlem); a twelve-feature slate spanning the United States, France, Senegal, Rwanda, Haiti and Brazil; and a seven-film shorts program, Love With No Place to Go.

Notes

Staged 2026-10-21 under CTL-GOV-006 (Festival Pass). Gate A: absent from both stores (head sweep, 2026-10-21). TYPING CALL, stated on the record: typed Event/other — a named, dated, annually recurring presented program with editions, typed with the festival family per the Black Harvest precedent (CTL-E-6239, Event/other). The alternative, Practice/other (Cinema/Chicago's Programs page lists Black Perspectives as a year-round program), is recorded here for founder review at merge; the Event typing was chosen because the record's substance is the program's editions and slates, beginning with its 1997 founding edition. FOUNDING wording: Cinema/Chicago's release states the program was 'Founded in 1997 in collaboration with Spike Lee'; the record claims a founding collaboration, not a sole founder — no founded_by edge to Lee is staged (see blocked relationships in the packet). [Media layer — folded from the staged festival-pass packet at merge, 2026-10-21] Map: N/A — A program presented across the festival's venues; no single Place record is homed for it in this graph. Photo: HELD — basis: No Wikimedia Commons file depicts the Black Perspectives program, its screenings, or its honorees in program capacity (searches 2026-10-21). Chart: FILLED — CTL-created chart (black / deep red / gold) from counts taken on the official BP30 program page (12 feature presentations, 7 shorts in the named shorts program, 4 tribute/award events), counted 2026-10-21. Video: HELD — No CTL-owned or rights-cleared matching-entity video verified at the file level in this pass; official-channel embeds were not file-verified, so the slot is held rather than assumed. Audio: HELD — No rights-cleared matching-entity audio exists for this record.
