Rhizome is a nonprofit arts organization founded in 1996 by artist Mark Tribe, beginning as an email listserv, and based in New York. Since 2003 it has been a partner organization of the New Museum — 'partner' is Rhizome's own wording, and the organization remains independent — while building infrastructure for born-digital art and its preservation. Its ArtBase, founded in 1999, is an archive of born-digital art holding more than 2,200 works, per the ArtBase FAQ accessed in October 2026. Rhizome hosted and developed the Webrecorder web-archiving tools from 2015; the hosted service was rebranded Conifer in June 2020, the Webrecorder project spun off as a standalone entity the same year, and Rhizome has announced that its Conifer hosted service will be discontinued in June 2026, with collections remaining accessible.

Notes

STAGING: temp id EB-15. The New Museum has no live record in the build graph, so the partner connection is target-absent; partnered_with would in any case require an Organization target (schema) — see blocked edges. CURATOR'S JUDGMENT (DRAFT): Rhizome is the packet's digital-preservation elder: it was archiving born-digital art before 'digital preservation' had a name.
