Media Cloud is an open-source, open-data platform for studying media ecosystems online. It began in 2011 at the Berkman Klein Center for Internet and Society at Harvard University, developed to examine the influence of citizen bloggers on digital news, and was then incubated at the MIT Media Lab's Center for Civic Media until that center closed in 2020. Today it runs as a consortium collaboration between the University of Massachusetts Amherst, led by Ethan Zuckerman, Northeastern University, led by Rahul Bhargava, and the Media Ecosystems Analysis Group, led by Fernando Bermejo. Tracking millions of stories from news sources worldwide, it lets academic researchers, journalism critics and interested citizens examine which sources cover which stories, what language outlets use, and how stories spread between outlets.

Notes
DATE NOTE: the project's About page dates its beginning to 2011; one of its own publications-analysis posts says initial development began in 2007. The record uses the About page's 2011 and flags the conflict here. NON-CLAIM: Yochai Benkler is NOT a current lead — he appears as a Harvard Law co-author on a 2021 project paper; the current consortium list governs. GRADE BASIS: Verified — the project's own site plus Harvard, MIT and UMass pages. BLOCKED EDGES: origin at EB-38 (Berkman Klein) and incubation at CTL-E-4116 (MIT Media Lab) are documented in the sources, but the schema has no Institution→Institution origin/incubation predicate (operated_by and branch_of would misstate both) — listed as blocked in the packet memo. PHOTO: HELD (see media). CURATOR'S JUDGMENT (DRAFT): Media Cloud is the instrument CTL's 'Who Controls the Story?' work needs — a way to count coverage instead of arguing about it. (Draft judgment, not fact.)
