The Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society is a Harvard University research center studying cyberspace. It was established in 1996 at Harvard Law School by Charles Nesson and Jonathan Zittrain as the Center on Law and Technology, growing out of a 1994 seminar on Internet issues. A 1997 Berkman family gift underwrote it, and in 1998 it became the Berkman Center for Internet & Society at Harvard Law School. In May 2008 it was elevated to a university-wide interfaculty initiative, reporting to Harvard's Provost and the Law School Dean while remaining administratively housed at the Law School. On July 5, 2016, following a gift from Michael R. Klein, it was renamed the Berkman Klein Center. Its stated mission is to explore and understand cyberspace, study its development, dynamics, norms and standards, and to assess the need, or lack of need, for laws and sanctions.

Notes

GRADE BASIS: Verified — the center's own FAQ plus the Harvard Gazette's independent confirmation of the 2016 gift and rename. BLOCKED EDGE: housed-at / reports-to Harvard University (CTL-E-4210, type School) — the schema defines no Institution→School predicate (branch_of targets Institution only; operated_by targets Organization/Institution), so the Harvard housing documented in the sources is carried in this record's text and listed as blocked in the packet memo. PHOTO: HELD with a named candidate (see media). CURATOR'S JUDGMENT (DRAFT): Berkman is the establishment node of this packet — CTL's technology lane should know exactly where the field's center of gravity sits, and cite it precisely. (Draft judgment, not fact.)
