Data & Society, formally the Data & Society Research Institute, is an independent nonprofit research and policy institute founded by researcher danah boyd in 2014. It began in New York City, growing from twelve fellows in a borrowed meeting room to, by its tenth anniversary in 2024, some forty-five full-time staff across the United States. The institute studies the social, political and economic implications of data-centric technologies, automation and artificial intelligence, and uses that knowledge to inform and shape policy from the ground up. Its work centres people, communities and the environment over technological determinism, arguing that empirical evidence should directly inform how new technologies are developed and governed, and that technologies must be grounded in equity, rights protections and human dignity.

The record

Notes

GRADE BASIS: Verified — the institute's own site and anniversary program plus independent ACM confirmation of founder and year. BLOCKED EDGE: founded_by → danah boyd — boyd is not a live record. PHOTO: HELD (see media). CURATOR'S JUDGMENT (DRAFT): Data & Society is the policy shop whose framing — people and communities over technological determinism — most closely matches CTL's own; the graph should hold it as a cited neighbor. (Draft judgment, not fact.)
