Wilma Rudolph
PROVISIONAL evidence grade of this record
Wilma Rudolph (1940–1994) overcame childhood polio and scarlet fever — doctors said she might never walk normally — to become the fastest woman in the world. At the 1960 Rome Olympics she won three gold medals (100m, 200m, 4×100m relay), the first American woman to win three track golds at a single Games. Her triumph made her an international icon and a symbol of the civil-rights era in American sport.
